Old dwarfs, new bases

It's been a while since I last posted. Been a busy time with holidays, work and I unfortunately had something wrong with my eyes for about a week which put a stop to any painting. Another problem I had was deciding on how to base my dwarfs. My current basing is to paint them brown then stick on some static grass followed by tufts or flowers. Not very exciting but it gets the job done. Since the old world has taken over I wanted to rebase my dwarfs in the hopes of one day using them.

I've tried out a few ideas but nothing was really working for me (I did stumble across something I'd like to use for my Bretonnia army). My dwarfs are quite a colourful bunch and I always imagined them living in a nice meadow area brewing up some beer but I was struggling to get the look I wanted. In a last desperate act I went to the gaming store and picked up some army painter grass to try out. The results are ok but I still feel like they need something either some soil or leaves to break up all the green. I might try out adding a few elements and see how it looks.

Although there's no real rush to get them done there will be some 500 point games in about a week I'd like to go to. Not sure if I will be able to yet but seems like a good idea to get the dwarves ready just in case. I think this is a good opportunity to get the army done as well, I have the models and a reason to paint them so might as well get on it. The problem with that is I'm still learning the empire so if I'm working on the dwarves I'm not expanding the empire which desperately needs a bit more punch. I also want to paint some fun stuff so I'll need to make time for that.

Any ideas on how to improve my basing would very welcome.

Thanks for reading.

  1. I think the basing is fine.
I suspect one issue may be that with Dwarves not being so tall and on 25mm bases they can look lost.
On ‘proper’ 20mm bases then they have more presence and their height is less of an issue, but I feel that on 25mm bases they look small so it could be easy to add more to the base but that risks overshadowing them?

The flowers are nice and are enough I reckon, though had it been me, I would have opted for rock and stones over girly flowers :P

    1. I did check out your movement tray fillers for ideas and I think some shrubs would work out. The modern dwarves probably look fine on 25mm but my bugmans rangers could double up on them. My dwarves are less about rock and stone and more about peace and love.
