Bugman's cart/baggage train
Ok so this was a rush job. After finding out I needed a baggage train I found out my chosen model was the wrong base size. Not too big a deal I could just stick it on a bigger base but I'd like to be able to use it in a game so the base size matters. After a quick trip to Amazon I had a plan and all that was left is to paint the mini and sort out the base.
I cleaned the model up the best I could but these old minis are a nightmare even if they are freshly made. I then set about pinning everything as I'm sure a slight breeze would make it fall apart. While painting it up I kept finding bits I'd missed, some were cleaned others were ignored all depending on how short of time I was feeling at that moment. Luckily painting wasn't too bad, apart from the pony I can't paint ponys, everything seemed to come together quite nicely with my biggest decision being how to paint the weird things on the board shown below. I decided you need snacks with your beer so painted them up as KP nuts and scampi fries. If you eat all the packets there's a picture of Valaya in a bikini but you can't see much due to the beard.
I then had to get it on the correct base size. I had two ideas on how to achieve this one easy and one harder but should look better. The first was to stick it on the correct size base with some magnets which would solve the base size and maybe look like it was on a little hill. Due to my impatience though the magnets were slightly off so rather than clicking into place the base jumps off on an angle. The second idea was to cut out the smaller base size into the bigger one so it slots in place. I tried it with some snips but the plastic was quite brittle and ended up snapping. Luckily I'm rather reckless with a hobby knife and was eventually able to cut out the correct sized hole, more or less. The larger base doesn't sit exactly right. I kept slicing off sections but couldn't get it just right and I was starting to worry about creating a large gap. I also snapped off the narrow corner at one point although some super glue sorted that out.
After adding the grass and flowers it doesn't look too bad. The crates turned out to be 3D printed and not great quality, definitely not worth what I spent on them, but for what it's for they'll be fine and I got a lot of them. I also rushed the painting. The big crate had the bottom carved out and a magnet put in so the whole thing sits together quite nicely.
With that the army is finished with a day to spare. I'll try to remember to get a picture of the whole force during the tournament and include it in the write up. Five games over two days in bound to win one of them right?
Thanks for reading.

Yeah it is a right mess.
ReplyDeleteI unpacked mine, looked it at and put it back for when I can be bothered with making it paintable.
Greenstuff and the like.
Looks nice painted and I am especially liking the KP nuts and scampi fries.
OI!! Dwarf women don't have beards you heathen!!
Proper old school mini though!!
I normally don't like working with resin minis but after this one I'm very happy the war wagon wasn't made in metal.
ReplyDeletePeanuts idea is just genious!!!!
